Chandratal is located near the Kunzum pass on the main highway connecting Manali and Kaza - the subdivisional headquarters of Spiti Valley. Chandratal is accessible via two trekking trails. Batal and Kunzum la are the starting points of the trails leading to Chandratal. A motorable road exists between Batal and Chandratal and can be used if you are travelling between June - August.
Chandratal is one of the few trekking destinations in this region that is accessible all through the year. Even during winters when Rohtang pass is closed making Batal - Chandratal trail inaccessible Chandratal remains accessible from Kunzum La via Shimla - Poo - Kaza route which is more challenging than the Batal - Chandratal route.
Batal is the popular start point of the Chandratal trek. A gentle climb up from Batal on a motorable road gets you to Chandratal. The road is opened for vehichles by around 15 June.

Trek Routes to Chandratal
There are two trekking routes to Chandratal, one starts at Kumzum La and the other at Batal. The Kumzum La route to Chandratal is shorter however is better avoided during rains. If you are taking the route from Kunzum La its better to take it on the way to Chandratal rather than while returning. The Batal route to Chandratal is a gentle climb and a nice walk on return. Chandratal is about 14 km from Batal. During June - August when the roads are cleared, you can take a jeep for the first 12 kms enroute Chandratal trek.
Losar located about 20 kms from Kunzum la and 57 kms from Kaza is a stopover point before one heads onto Kunzum la pass till the road meets the Manali - Leh highway at Gramphu. Losar is a popular stopover for bikers connecting Spiti valley with Manali.
